“How often should I get a haircut?” comes up in my chair almost every day. The honest answer: it depends on the cut. A sharp skin fade starts to lose its shape in about two weeks, while a longer textured cut can easily go five or six. Here’s the schedule I recommend to clients at Bulletproof Barbering in Bountiful, Utah.

Quick answer: haircut schedule by style

Haircut style How often Why
Skin fade or bald fade Every 2–3 weeks The shortest part grows out first and the blend softens fast
Mid or low fade Every 3–4 weeks More length to work with, so it holds its shape longer
Taper fade Every 3–5 weeks Only the edges are short, so it grows out naturally
Medium-length textured cut Every 4–6 weeks Needs shaping, not constant trimming
Longer hair and mullets Every 5–8 weeks Clean up the shape and the neckline
Beard trim and lineup Every 2–3 weeks Edges and cheek lines blur quickly

Fades: every two to four weeks

Fades look their best in the first ten days. After that, the bottom of the fade grows in and the blend starts to look patchy. If you like a crisp skin fade, book every two to three weeks. If you’re fine with a softer look, a mid fade or low fade can stretch to four weeks.

Tip: book your next appointment before you leave. It’s the easiest way to keep a regular spot.

Tapers and medium-length cuts: every four to six weeks

A taper only shortens the sideburns and neckline, so it grows out gracefully. Medium-length and longer textured haircuts, which are my specialty, are about shape and weight more than length. Every four to six weeks keeps the texture right without losing the length you’re growing.

Beards: every two to three weeks

Even if you’re growing your beard out, a regular trim keeps it looking intentional. A clean neckline, a sharp cheek line and an even shape make a short beard look sharp and a long beard look healthy. At Bulletproof Barbering the haircut and beard with hot towel is $60, or you can book beard only for $35.

Kids’ haircuts: every four to six weeks

Kids grow fast, but most don’t need a cut more than once a month. Kids’ cuts are the same price as adults, and kids need to be able to listen and sit still for the whole cut so it comes out clean and safe.

Signs you’re overdue for a haircut

  • Your fade no longer has a visible blend, just one fuzzy length.
  • Hair is touching the tops of your ears or curling over your collar.
  • Your neckline has grown in and looks uneven.
  • Your style won’t sit the way it did the week after your cut.
  • Your beard has lost its cheek line and neckline.
